It’s rare that you get a chance to browse in shops after hours so it was a real treat to spend an evening at Lilac Rose in Cambridge. It was a chance to reacquaint myself with their shop on Bridge Street: one of the prettiest areas of Cambridge city centre.
Lilac Rose have been in Cambridge since 2010 and describe themselves as “. . . an independent fashion boutique selling women’s clothes, jewellery and accessories.” After a quick browse it’s clear that their handpicked dresses have a real emphasis on colour and print (they definitely don’t do plain!) and what might not be obvious at first, is the importance they put on the way the dress fits and feels; I’d say they have their priorities right!
Keen to promote British designers, Lilac Rose held this event to showcase the new autumn & winter styles from a brand that shares their ethical stance and fashion values: Emily and Fin.
Starting in 2002 on London’s famous Portobello Market, Emily and Fin pay particular attention to the quality and fit of every garment. Still designing & developing their collections in London, they have overseas factories which receive regular visits to ensure safe working conditions and standards. Such is the brand’s appeal, they now have stockists worldwide.
I went along with some other #CambMeetUp bloggers and we were greeted by owners, Amanda & Mark; shop manager, Andrew; two members of staff from the sister shop in Leamington Spa, Laima & Abby; and Emily and Fin’s International Sales & Marketing Manager, Aine McCourt.
The mini ‘fashion show’ saw Laima and #CambMeetUp founder, Pippa, trying on different styles so we could see the fit and detail in close-up. Aine took us through the features of each dress: the concealed pockets, pleats and dainty buttons. Each dress style has a different neckline and the bodice, waist & skirt are all designed to flatter your shape. The dresses are all fully lined and machine washable – a real bonus!
With sizes from 6 to 18 and a good range of styles and fits, it really is a brand that will suit all ages and body shapes. Emily and Fin have been careful to create a collection that are confidence building and make you feel amazing.
If you find a dress with a print design that you love, but the style doesn’t quite work for you, there is a chance they will have another dress shape with the same print. For example, the Poppies a Plenty print was worn in the Ada style by Laima on the evening. It’s available in two other styles: with a scooped neckline (Isobel) and with a jewel neckline (Lucy).
I do love the names of their dresses, as I imagine they might be named after people who are special to Emily and Fin. I was so pleased to have learnt so much about this wonderful British brand and I will be sure to keep an eye on their future collections.
(Obligatory blogger selfie! 🙂 )
As well as fashion, Lilac Rose also stock a wonderful selection of gifts that you find hard not to buy instantly – for yourself or for friends. Check it out for beautiful homewares, quirky books and pretty stationery. It’s one of those feel-good shops so pop along for a browse and see what takes your eye.
Bye for now!
